Mr. Sam Leon | PhD Research

The geography of the small island of England is particularly favourable for offshore wind turbine depolyment. The safe, efficient motion of these giants (up to 300 m tall - just a bit taller than the Eiffel Tower of Paris) relies on synthetic grease lubricants. Having inheritated Holly's demented passion for catechol polymers - inspired by mussel foot proteins, Sam aspires to transform wind turbine grease formulation with new additives, which will also be more sustainable than the traditional formulation.

Sam's fate as a PhD student was sealed when he sat next to Peter Dowding of Infineum at our group Christmas dinner in Dec 2024, as a young impressionable final year project studuent studying adsorption isotherms of polymers on particles.  He has since quickly embraced the PhD decadence of blue cheese fondue of Grenoble and weekly indulgence of the Pudding Club (now its secretary!). When not tearing up his small garden or scattering X-rays and neutrons, Sam is trying to become our resident expert for the UMT tribometer.

Sam is currently very much looking forward to chairing a session at the ECIS student conference in San Sebastián.
